Lito Sousa dies at 59: the farewell to the voice that brought millions closer to aviation

He explained turbulence, unraveled the backstage of the planes and helped passengers face the fear of flying. Learn about Lito Sousa's trajectory, the family's search for treatment and the legacy that remains.
Comadre, those who usually travel know how much a calm explanation can make a difference when the plane shakes and the heart races. Lito Sousa built his relationship with the public just like that: transforming complex aviation issues into a conversation that people could understand.
The influencer, aircraft mechanic, pilot and creator of the Aviões e Músicas channel died at the age of 59 this Thursday, October 1, 2026. The information was confirmed by the family. He had been diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare and rapidly evolving neurological condition.
A farewell marked by love
Lito's wife, Mila Seidl, published a message on social media that translates the affection of a shared life:
"A big hug and see you on the next flight. It was an honor to have traveled with you. I love you. Always."
Lito is survived by Mila and her seven-year-old son Malone. At the time of writing, the official cause of death had not yet been disclosed, according to Diário do Nordeste. The diagnosis he faced was public, but this information must be differentiated from medical confirmation of death.
From hangars to the homes of millions of Brazilians
His full name was Joselito Geraldo de Sousa. With more than three decades of experience in aviation, he worked for companies such as Varig, Transbrasil and United Airlines. Long before he became known on the internet, his routine was already linked to aircraft maintenance and safety.
The Aviões e Músicas project started as a blog in 2004 and arrived on YouTube in 2010. On the platform, Lito began to explain how planes work, maintenance procedures, and what happens during turbulence. His audience grew especially during the pandemic, and the channel exceeded 3.7 million subscribers.
His content also addressed high-profile accidents, such as those involving the Mamonas Assassinas, the Chapecoense delegation, and singer Marília Mendonça. He also created the Lito Academy, expanding his role in aviation education.
An important part of this work was to help those who were afraid of flying. In 2021, Lito became a pilot and received the SIPAER Highlight, recognition from the Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents for his contribution to the flight safety culture.
The diagnosis and the search for a possible treatment
The diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease was announced by Mila on August 21, after weeks of neurological investigation. The family sought alternatives in research institutions and experimental treatment programs abroad.
On September 4, Anvisa exceptionally authorized the import and individual use of the experimental substance ALN-6457. The request was submitted by the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, responsible for monitoring Lito. At the time, the compound had not yet formally initiated clinical studies in humans to treat the disease.
Lito even received the experimental treatment. The authorization represented an attempt given the severity of the condition, with no guarantee of efficacy or recovery.
Understand the disease he faced
According to the Ministry of Health, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is rare, progressive and fatal. It is related to abnormal proteins called prions and can cause memory loss, changes in vision, difficulty in coordination, muscle spasms and other neurological impairments.
So far, no therapy has demonstrated the ability to change its fatal evolution. Care includes the control of symptoms and complications, as well as support for the patient and family. The Ministry also clarifies that there is no evidence of transmission through daily life, such as hugs, kisses or sharing utensils.
Care with information was also part of this story
During treatment, Mila had to deny publications that announced an unconfirmed improvement. She explained that the rumors increased the family's suffering and reinforced that any news would be communicated by her.
A legacy that continues in each explanation
Lito's trajectory shows the strength of those who share knowledge clearly. His videos remain as a record of a work that brought the public closer to a universe full of doubts, curiosities and fears.
For those who found comfort in his explanations before a trip, the memory will also be that of a familiar voice. To his wife, son, family and friends, Comadre expresses solidarity in this moment of farewell.
